Department network printers can be added to faculty and staff computers as long as the IP address is known or the computer is domain joined.
Computers that are not on the UVM domain
- You will need to know the IP address of the printer. This can either be found from the printer itself or from another computer which is joined to that printer.
- Mac:
- Open “Print & Fax”, the easiest way is to search for it using Spotlight
- Click the “IP” tab and the “+” to add a new printer.
- Choose the appropriate printing protocol from the Protocol pop-up menu.
- Type the IP address or DNS name for the printer in the Address field.
- Enter a name and location for the printer, so you can identify it in the Printer pop-up menu.
- If the Print Using pop-up menu doesn’t display the name of your printer’s model, choose the item appropriate for your printer from the Print Using pop-up menu, and then select your printer in the Model Name list.
- Click add.
- PC – Vista and XP:
- Control Panel > Printers
- Add a local printer
- Create a new port and use “Standard TCP/IP Port”
- Enter the IP address into the “Hostname or IP Address” field.
- From here you may need to go to the manufacturer’s site to download the correct drivers.
- After this, you should be all set.
- PC – Windows 7
- Control Panel > Device and Printers
- Add a printer.
- Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
- Ignore the generated list and click the link below that says “The printer that I want isn’t listed”
- Select “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname” and click “Next”
- Enter the IP address into the “Hostname or IP Address” field and click “Next”
- You may be given a list of Printer models and types if you need to install the correct driver.
- Once the driver is installed you will be all set.
Domain joined computers (Generally PCs only)
ETS has a comprehensive set of instructions to add printers which are part of the Campus Active Directory Services. These instructions for Windows PCs can be found here: Installing Network Printers
